NightShift Nurse – Complete User Manual
Chapter 1: Mastering Your Schedule
Welcome to the Nurse Roster Guide. This manual is written for the unsung heroes of healthcare: the night shift workers. Managing a roster is not just about knowing when to show up; it is about managing your biological clock, your social life, and your sanity. NightShift Nurse is the tool that bridges the gap between your chaotic schedule and a structured life.
Chapter 2: The Roster Interface
When you open the app, you are presented with the Calendar Grid. This is the heart of your Nurse Roster Guide usage. Unlike standard calendars (Google/Apple), which treat every day as a 24-hour block, our grid understands ‘Shifts’.
2.1 Defining Shift Types
You can customize your shift keys. The defaults are:
- D (Day): 07:00 – 19:00. Standard ward shift.
- N (Night): 19:00 – 07:00. The vampire shift.
- E (Early): 07:00 – 15:00. Common in clinics.
- L (Late): 13:00 – 21:00. The twilight shift.
To enter a shift, simply tap the date. Tapping repeatedly cycles through D -> N -> E -> L -> Off. This ‘Rapid Tap’ interface allows you to input a 6-week roster in under 60 seconds.
Chapter 3: Pattern Recognition
The app’s AI analyzes your input. If you enter ‘D-D-N-N-O-O-O-O’, it recognizes this as a standard 8-day rotation. A pop-up will ask: “Do you want to repeat this pattern for the next 6 months?” Clicking ‘Yes’ instantly populates your entire year. This feature alone saves hours of manual entry.
Chapter 4: Fatigue Management
The ‘Fatigue Bar’ at the top of the screen is your safety monitor. It fills up based on a cumulative algorithm of hours worked versus hours rested. Red Zone Warning: If you book more than 4 consecutive night shifts, the bar turns red. This indicates a high risk of clinical error due to sleep deprivation. Use this visual data to show your manager why you need a break.
Chapter 5: Family Sync
The number one cause of domestic friction for nurses is the partner who forgets you are sleeping. “Why didn’t you answer the phone at 2 PM?” “Because I worked until 7 AM!” NightShift Nurse solves this via Calendar Sync. It pushes your roster to the family’s shared calendar. Crucially, it blocks out your sleep time (e.g., 08:00 – 16:00) as ‘BUSY / ASLEEP’. This visual blocking prevents accidental disturbances.
Chapter 6: The Cloud & Your Profile
NightShift Nurse 3.0 introduces robust cloud synchronization. By creating a standardized account (Email/Password), your roster is no longer trapped on a single phone.
Cross-Device Sync: Login on your iPad, your Android phone, or your partner’s device. Your schedule, teams, and settings synchronize instantly via Google Firebase.
Profile Management: Set your display name and profile picture in ‘Settings -> Profile’. This identity is what your team members will see when you join a ward roster.
Chapter 7: Team Roster & Collaboration
Nursing is a team sport. The Team Roster feature allows wards to share a unified view of who is working when.
Joining a Team: Ask your Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) or team admin for the unique Team Code. Go to the ‘Team’ tab, tap ‘Join Existing Team’, and enter the code. You will instantly see your colleagues’ shifts alongside your own.
Creating a Team: Senior staff can ‘Create a Team’. You will be assigned a permanent 6-digit Invite Code. Share this with your staff. As Admin, you can remove members or regenerate the code if it leaks.
Swap Requests: Need a Friday night off? Don’t text 50 people. Use the ‘Request Swap’ button. Select the shift you need covered and add a note (e.g., “Wedding”). The request appears on the Team Dashboard for all colleagues to see and accept.
Chapter 8: Financial Tracking
Stop guessing your paycheck. The Wages tab provides a real-time estimate of your earnings based on your specific roster.
Configuration: In Settings, input your Base Hourly Rate and Night Shift Differential (e.g., +$5.00/hr). The app automatically categorizes every hour you log.
The Breakdown:
– Regular Hours: Standard day work.
– Night Hours: Hours flagged with the ‘N’ key or custom night shifts.
– Overtime: Any hours exceeding your ‘Standard Shift Length’ (e.g., >8h).
PDF Export (Premium): Generate a professional Timesheet PDF at the end of the month. Verified shifts, total hours, and estimated pay are formatted for direct submission to payroll.
Chapter 9: Health & Analytics
Data is power. The Stats screen visualizes your work-life balance.
The Pie Chart: See exactly what percentage of your life is spent on Day vs. Night shifts. A balanced chart usually indicates better circadian health.
Achievements: Gamify your grind. Track your ‘Longest Shift’ (did you really survive a 16-hour double?) and your ‘Shift Streak’.
Team Analytics (Admins): Team leaders get a specialized dashboard showing ‘Average Team Fatigue’. Use this to identify burnout risks before a clinical error occurs. Staffing Predictions help you see which days are under-resourced.
Chapter 10: Connectivity & Privacy
Offline-First Design: NightShift Nurse works perfectly without internet. You can edit your calendar, check stats, and view duties in ‘Airplane Mode’. Cloud sync will queue your changes and upload them the moment you reconnect.
Privacy: Your personal roster is private by default. Only by joining a Team do you consent to share your shift times with that specific group. You can leave a team at any time to revoke access.
